The Social Science Survey Center (SSSC) is administratively housed within the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (ISBER) at UCSB and physically located in Room 2219 North Hall. For more than three decades, ISBER–formerly the Community and Organization Research Institute (CORI) – has served as the campus Organized Research Unit (ORU) for sponsored research in the social sciences and, to a lesser extent, the humanities and other units of the university. ISBER’s original charge was to “serve as a major resource for basic research in the social sciences,” encouraging “faculty participation in interdisciplinary research.” With ISBER’s absorption of the Social Process Research Institute (SPRI) in 1990, ISBER grew rapidly and became even more diverse in terms of client base. In 1998–99, ISBER’s 71 submitted proposals and 106 funded projects involved a total of 124 PI’s and co-PI’s . Funded projects totaled $8.2 million in contracts, grants, gifts, royalties, and other awards.

The SSSC is an interdisciplinary enterprise comprised of faculty from the social sciences with extensive experience with survey research. The Center is managed by a Director, in conjunction with an Oversight Committee, an Advisory Board and its Review Panel. The administrative structure of the Center is as follows:

The Faculty Director of the Center is Professor Jon Sonstelie of the Department of Economics. Day to day operations of the center are managed by Paolo A. Gardinali , the Associate Director, who manages the operations and oversees the technical direction of the Center as well as of the Benton Research Laboratory.
Oversight is provided by an Oversight Committee which is composed of the Dean of the Social Sciences, Melvin Oliver, and the Director of the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (Rich Appelbaum). This group coordinates issues of overlap between the College of Letters and Science and the Office of Research. After three years of operation the Center will be reevaluated by the Oversight Committee and the Advisory Board, which will recommend any necessary revisions to the purpose and scope of the Center.
An Advisory Board of UCSB faculty with experience conducting or using survey research. The Advisory Board provides regular input regarding the policies and operation of the Social Science Survey Center. Appointments to the Advisory Board remain in effect for two years, but individuals may serve consecutive terms on the Advisory Board.
A three-member subset of the Advisory Board (new members rotated in and out quarterly, staggering for one year terms), plus the Director of the Social Science Survey Center as chair, convenes monthly. The purpose of the Review Panel is to review proposals for their scientific merit and/or teaching value. The Review Panel makes recommendations regarding the scheduling of projects as well as whether or not the Center should accept each contract.
